Sharp eyes premium smartphone market in Indonesia

JAKARTA, NNA - Sharp Corp. will launch its latest full-screen smartphone in Indonesia toward the end of the year as it seeks a slice of the country's premium mobile phone market, according to a senior company official.

"We will launch it in Indonesia around November or December," said Sergio Ticoalu, head of brand and digital marketing, Indonesia, at Foxconn Technology -- Sharp Smartphone. Foxconn is the trading name of Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., which owns the Japan-based electronics company.

Ticoalu sounded optimistic that the Sharp S2 model, also put on sale in China on Aug. 8, will be well received by Indonesian consumers due to its greater technological advantage and lower price than those of competing high-end smartphones such as Samsung Galaxy S8 and iPhone 7.

"Our main highlight is free-form cutting technology that makes the Sharp S2 screen ratio much larger than those of other products. It's the first time we use this kind of technology because it is quite risky," Ticoalu said, referring to the new model's bezel-less display.

The price will be roughly in the range of 6 million rupiah ($450), much cheaper than Samsung's Galaxy S8, selling locally for $787 to $899, and the iPhone 7, at $649-$969, according to Ticoalu.

Given two other new models launched earlier this year and three more going on sale soon, including Sharp S2, Sergio expects Sharp can grab 2-3 percent of the Indonesian smartphone market next year. (NNA/Kyodo)
